What is the fertile window and how is it calculated?

Most cycle apps draw a fertile window on the calendar, a band of about six days, and few explain where it comes from. The math behind it is simple. Knowing it tells you how much to trust the band, and what to do when your own cycle refuses to cooperate.

The short answer

The fertile window is the stretch of days in each cycle when sex can lead to pregnancy. It covers roughly the five days before ovulation plus the day of ovulation itself, about six days in total. That specific shape comes from two biological clocks: how long an egg survives and how long sperm do.

How long eggs and sperm survive

Each cycle, one ovary releases an egg. According to the NHS, that egg lives for only about 24 hours after ovulation. Sperm are far more patient: inside the reproductive tract they can survive up to five days, and occasionally as long as seven. So pregnancy can result from sex that happened nearly a week before ovulation, but almost never from sex more than a day after it. Stack those two clocks together and you get the window: a handful of days ending the day the egg is released.

Ovulation is not always day 14

The textbook cycle puts ovulation on day 14, and that is where a lot of confusion starts. Ovulation timing is better anchored to the end of the cycle than the beginning: the phase after ovulation (the luteal phase) is relatively stable, so ovulation tends to happen roughly 10 to 16 days before the next period, per the NHS. The phase before ovulation is the one that stretches and shrinks. A large study of more than 600,000 cycles found the pre-ovulation phase averaged about 17 days but varied widely, while the luteal phase clustered around 12 days.

In practice, someone with 33-day cycles likely ovulates around day 19 rather than day 14, and someone with 25-day cycles may ovulate around day 11. Day 14 is only a good guess if your cycles run 28 days, and most cycles do not.

How calendar-based apps estimate the window

Most period trackers, Plum included, use calendar math built on your own logged history. The steps are straightforward:

  • Learn your average cycle length, and how much it varies, from the periods you have logged
  • Predict the start date of your next period from that average
  • Estimate ovulation by counting back about 14 days from that predicted period
  • Mark the estimated ovulation day plus the five days before it as the fertile window

Because every step leans on your logged history, the estimate gets sharper the more cycles you log, and it is only ever as steady as your cycle itself. An app can also be honest about uncertainty, widening the window or flagging low confidence when your cycles vary a lot. Signals your body gives

Calendar estimates are forecasts, but your body gives observable signals as ovulation approaches. ACOG’s overview of fertility awareness methods describes the main ones:

  • Cervical mucus becomes clearer, slippery, and stretchy in the days before ovulation
  • Basal body temperature rises slightly, about half a degree Fahrenheit, shortly after ovulation, which confirms it happened but cannot predict it in advance
  • Ovulation predictor kits detect the surge in luteinizing hormone that occurs roughly 24 to 36 hours before ovulation
  • Some people also notice one-sided pelvic twinges or breast tenderness, as Mayo Clinic notes

The most reliable picture comes from combining a calendar estimate with one or more of these signals, especially if your cycles are not clockwork.

Where estimates fall short

Ovulation day moves around even in regular cycles, so a predicted window can miss the real one. Stress, illness, and travel can delay ovulation in a given cycle after the prediction was already made. If you are trying to conceive

Precision matters less than people fear. ACOG’s advice for timing sex is simply to have it regularly through the fertile days, and Mayo Clinic suggests starting a few days before expected ovulation. Covering the window generously beats trying to hit one perfect day. If you are under 35 and have been trying for a year without success, or six months if you are 35 or older, that is the standard point to talk to a clinician.

A word on avoiding pregnancy

An app’s predicted fertile window is not birth control. Formal fertility-awareness methods exist, but they involve daily observations, specific rules, and proper instruction, and even then ACOG notes they are among the less effective contraceptive options in typical use. Two ways to tighten the estimate

History does the most work. After a few logged cycles an app can replace the textbook 28 with your real average, and if yours runs 25 or 33 days, that alone moves the predicted window by several days.
